Question Tags

Generally question tags are used in spoken english for the “confirmation of a statement”.Tags has two parts. They are

  2. Tag/ Question Tag

Ex She likes music, doesn’t she?

Statements are of two types. They are:

  • With Auxiliary verb/Helping verb
  • Without Auxiliary verb

Note 1 :-

  • Answer for question tags lies in the Answer .i.e A N S
  • A = Auxiliary verb
  • N = Not
  • S = Subject (pronoun)

Rules for using Question Tags:-

Rule 1:-

  • Only the short form ” n’t ” is used in Question tag.
  • A comma ( , ) must be added after the statement.

Rule 2:-

  • The tag begins with a small letter and ends with question mark ( ? ). 

Rule 3:-

  • An affirmative or positive statement has negative tag and a negative statement has positive tag.

Rule 4:-

  • A suitable pronoun is used in tag as a subject according to number, gender, and the person.qt6

Ex:– 1.Kamala is in house,isn’t she?                                                     2.The children are in bathroom, aren’t they?    

Rule 5:-

  • In the case of ” am “ in the positive statement ” aren’t “ is used in tag.

Ex:- I am a teacher, aren’t I ? (But not ” amn’t I ” )

Rule 6:-

  • But when ‘am‘ is used  in negative statement, the tag is “am I ” ?

Ex:– I am not a musician, am I ?images

Rule 7:-

  • The appropriate form of “do” is used according to the subject and tense of subject.qt4.jpg

Rule 8:-

  • With imperative expression an order or request, model verbs like will, would, can, could are used in tag.

Ex; 1.Help me, could you?    2.Close the door , will you?

Rule 9:

  • Semi Negative words are Few, Little, Hardly, Scarcely, Rarely, Seldom, Never etc.,We have to take positive tag.

Examples:

  1.  Few members attended meeting, did they?
  2.  Little process was made, was it ?
  3. We would scarcely understand what he said, would we?
  4. They seldom meet him, do they?

Rule 10:  

  •   A few, A little are treated as positives. We can take negative tag

Examples:-

  1. A few members has attended it, hasn’t they ?  
  2. A little progress has been made, hasn’t they ?

Rule 11;

  • A Suggestion that start with “Let’s ” deserves “ shall we ? ” in the tag

EX: Let’s have a game of chess, shall we?

Rule 12:

  • We can use “they” in question tag  after ‘someone’, ‘somebody’, ‘Everyone’, ‘Everybody’, ‘None’, ‘Nobody’.
  • No one, Nobody and None of are negatives we take a positive tag.

Examples:

  1. No one loved me, did they?index.jpeg
  2. Everybody can’t be pleased, can they?
  3. None of the students came,did they?

Rule 13:

  • Some of you ” takes “you” in the tag.
  • Some of us” takes “we” in the tag.
  • Some of them” takes  “they” in the tag.
  • Above three are positives , so they take negative tag.

Ex: Some of you are learning english, aren’t you?

Rule 14:

  • It” is used in the question tag for “Something” and “Nothing”
  • “Something” is positive and takes negative tag.
  • “Nothing” is negative and takes positive tag.
